LIVE REVIEW: Comeback Kid @ Sound Control, Manchester (16/04/2014)
Since their formation in 2000, Comeback Kid’s reputation in the hardcore scene has gone from strength to strength, optimised by their most recent hugely impressive album ‘Die Knowing’, typically there was a fair bit of excitement around the place when they took to the stage at Manchester’s Sound Control.
With impressive, monumentally heavy support sets from The Greenery, Xibalba and Malevolence, all of who, technically, were insanely good, it was easy to see why they were chosen to open for the Canadians.
Then it was time for Comeback Kid, who did what everyone was expecting and absolutely smashed it. Playing a mixture of old and new tracks fresh from “Die Knowing” there was something for everyone.
In fact, the new tracks went down a treat, with ‘Should Know Better’ and ‘Wasted Arrows’ provoking massive crowd responses. We even got 2 helpings of “Wasted Arrows” due to the band shooting the music video for it first time round – something that was met by approval in the form of endless stage diving from members of the crowd.
The band not so long ago underwent a line-up change in the shape of a new drummer, so you could have forgiven them for maybe being a bit rusty. Tonight showed that definitely wasn’t the case as they sounded as tight an outfit as ever.
It was all topped off with a sing-a-long (of sorts). Well, more of a heavy scream along but the sentiment was there either way as the band dropped “Wake the Dead”.
The gig was basically a no frills attached, good old fashioned hardcore show, anyone who regularly goes to these kind of gigs will know energy and passion are the two biggest factors in any hardcore performance, and Comeback Kid supplied that in heaps.
