Dan Mangan & Blacksmith hammer out new single – Video

Dan Mangan & Blacksmith have revealed a comical new video to accompany the release of their lead single ‘Vessel’.

The track is the first to be released from the forthcoming LP ‘Club Meds’ out on January 12th via City Slang records and is Dan Mangan’s first new material since his 2011 solo work.

The video was directed by Ben Clarkson and features a Terry Gilliam (Monty Python) style wacky animation where nature and culture collide with comical effect. Speaking about the concept for the video Clarkson said:

“It is complicated to open a conversation about the way we depict our history and our identity. Stories are powerful, and the way histories are told often reinforce the power of the powerful. How we tell the story, how our oral, written and visual traditions transmit interpretations of the past affects our behaviour, our ontology, here in the present.”

Mangan’s last release  ‘Oh Fortune’ was released in 2011. The Vancouver-based artist has now returned with the new Blacksmith moniker has been adopted to officially recognise the musical partnership with his long-time band members. Blacksmith is a six piece outfit comprising Kenton Loewen (drums), Gordon Grdina (guitar), John Walsh (bass) and often JP Carter (trumpet), Jesse Zubot (violin) and Tyson Naylor (keys).

Speaking about the forthcoming album, Mangan has said:

“Club Meds is about sedation. Sedation can be chemical, but not exclusively so. There is a great vacation from actuality going on. Maybe there always has been. It seems like everybody else is already at the party and that life is somehow easier or more fun under the fog.
